A walk in the woods

On May 10, 2007, American Corner Bacau organized in partnership with “Ion Creanga” School, an activity on ecological issues. 26 students, aged 12, coordinated by their English teacher Daniela Petrescu, participated in this activity. The program started with the screening of a short movie having as main character an acorn named Pierre. He presented, in an attractive and accessible way, the stages of the trees’ life, the differences and resemblances between different kinds of trees, their use, etc. During the discussions that followed, the students completed the information acquired during the movie with their own knowledge about species of trees from different zones, or some curious facts from the trees’ world. After that, the students had a nice and instructive virtual walk in the woods, by watching another movie about the forest and its ecosystem: insects, birds and animals that are living in trees or are using different parts of them, plants like lichens, conks or moss, how to prepare yourself for a walk in the forest, rules of behavior in the wood. In the end, the students insisted on the importance of the trees in our life and on the necessity to protect them. The English class that took place at the American Corner Bacau delighted the young audience who manifested their wish to repeat this experience in the near future.

On May 11, 2007, an article, “School and ecology”, regarding this activity, appeared in a local newspaper, Informatia Bacaului.

O plimbare prin padure

In data de 10 mai, American Corner Bacau a organizat în colaborare cu Scoala “I. Creanga” o activitate educativa pe teme ecologice la care au participat 26 de elevi coordonati de prof. Daniela Petrescu. Activitatea a debutat cu vizionarea unui filmulet având ca personaj principal o ghinda. Aceasta a prezentat elevilor, într-o maniera atractiva si accesibila, etapele din viata unui copac, diferentele si asemanarile dintre diferite specii de arbori, importanta acestora în viata oamenilor, etc. În cadrul discutiilor care au urmat, elevii au completat informatiile desprinse din film cu diferite cunostinte acumulate anterior, referitoare la specii de arbori din diferite zone climatice si curiozitati din lumea arborilor. A urmat vizionarea unui al doilea film, referitor la padure si ecosistemul sau: insecte, pasari si animale care vietuiesc în copaci sau se hranesc cu diferite parti ale acestora, plante-parazit, reguli de comportament în padure. În final, s-a insistat pe importanta copacilor pentru mediul înconjurator si pe necesitatea protejarii acestora. Elevii participanti au fost încântati de ora de limba engleza desfasurata într-un spatiu nou si într-un mod mai putin conventional, aratându-se dornici sa mai repede aceasta experienta.

În ziarul Informatia Bacaului de vineri, 11 mai, a aparut un articol intitulat “Scoala si ecologie” referitor la aceasta activitate desfasurata la American Corner Bacau.
