Flag Day 2007

On June 14, 2007, American Corner Bacau celebrated Flag Day through an activity in which were involved 21 students, aged 10, and their schoolteacher Maria Ojog from the “Ferdinand I” High School, Bacau. First, the students were challenged to prove their knowledge regarding the United States: location, cities, capital and president, personalities from the American movies and music. After this short intro, the discussions were centered on the American Flag: colors and symbols, significance of the stripes and stars. The students learned about the history of the American flag and saw pictures illustrating the different versions it had during the history. After the kids had fun coloring in red-white-blue some American symbols (like Uncle Sam, or the eagle), the activity continued with information about Flag Day: since when are the American people celebrating this day, what significance it has for the Americans and how they celebrate it. The participants had also the chance to do a short virtual visit to the memorial house of Betsey Ross, who seems to be the one who designed the first American flag in 1777, at the request of the first American president, George Washington. After that, the students drew little flags in order to represent themselves and their hobbies and they justified the colors and symbols chosen.

In the end, the children received candies, American flags and maps of the USA. They showed joy at the funny hour spent at American Corner Bacau and they promised to return.

Two local newspapers illustrated in their articles on June 15, 2007 this activity organized by the American Corner Bacau: Ziarul de Bacau and Monitorul de Bacau.

Ziua Drapelului 2007
