Contemporary American Music at American Corner Constanta
On October 2 and 4, 2007, American Corner Constanta hosted a three-hour workshop on Contemporary American Music by Dinu Ghezzo, composer, conductor, performer, professor of music, director, Doctor Honoris Causa of Ovidius University Constanta.
Mr. Ghezzo talked about the variety of music genres and traditions in America: folk music, African-American, American-Indian, and Hispanic and about the gradual overlap of cultures brought by the early settlers. He focused on jazz and he also considered that real jazz is free jazz: it expresses the freedom of the mind. Among jazz players, he mentioned Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson and others.
The audience listened to different songs such as: “The Pigeon Song” and “A Hunting Song” - very similar to war songs, considering that hunting is a preparation for war; as well as “Pueblo”, “The Ghost Dance”, “The Rabbit Dance”, “Prison” (blues), “Preaching In The Church” (blues), “Getting Into The Piano Bar” - representing the beginning of jazz.
The workshop was attended by distinguished guests: Professor Dr. Adina Ciugureanu, the Dean of the Faculty of Letters, and Dr. Ana-Maria Munteanu, as well as students of New York University and other undergraduate and graduate students majoring in American Studies and English at Ovidius University, Constanta. On October 2, there were 28 participants, while on October 4, there were 12 participants and all of them enjoyed every moment of the event and actively engaged in discussions with Mr. Ghezzo.
