Presidents’ Day at American Corner Iasi

On February 19, 2007, in order to celebrate “Washington’s Birthday”, the holiday also known as “Presidents’ Day”, American Corner Iasi organized an essay presentation and a contest on this theme.

The participants were ten students from tenth and eleventh grade of “G. Ibraileanu” High School accompanied by their English teacher. They gave a short presentation about some American presidents: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. To make their presentation more interesting, each of the students tried to present less known information about these personalities, with reference from both political and personal life.

After they presented the materials the students participated in a small contest with questions inspired from the life of some of the 43 presidents in the U.S. history, questions related to birth place, religion or legends inspired from their life and activity.

In the end the best presentation and the best competitor received a diploma and as award a copy of “American History”. But because everybody worked and studied very hard, they were all rewarded with a small present-package that included an American flag, the Constitution of the United States and the “American Teenager” magazine.

Pe 19 februarie 2007, pentru a celebra “Washington’s Birthday” sarbatoare cunoscuta si sub denumirea de “Presidents’ Day”, American Corner Iasi a organizat o prezentare de eseuri si un concurs cu aceasta tema.

Participantii au fost 10 elevi din clasele a X-a si a XI-a de la Liceul “G. Ibraileanu”, insotiti de profesoara de limba engleza. Ei au sustinut cate o scurta prezentare despre cativa presedinti din istoria Statelor Unite: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton si George W. Bush. Pentru a avea prezentari cat mai interesante, fiecare dintre elevi a cautat sa vina cu informatii mai putin cunoscute din viata acestor personalitati si cu referiri atat din viata politica, cat si din cea personala.

Dupa ce au prezentat materialele, elevii au participat la un mic concurs cu intrebari din viata unora dintre cei 43 de presedinti din istoria SUA, intrebari referitoare la locul de nastere, religia sau legende legate de viata si activitatea lor.

La sfarsitul intalnirii, cea mai reusita prezentare si cel mai bun concurent au primit cate o diploma, iar ca premii cate un exemplar din “American History”. Dar pentru ca elevii au muncit si au invatat mult, toti participantii au primit cate un pachet-cadou care a cuprins un stegulet american, Constitutia S.U.A. si revista “American Teenager”.
