E.A. Poe at American Corner Iasi

On February 20, 2007, the second meeting of the „Meeting Uncle Sam” project organized in partnership with “Gh. I. Bratianu” School took place at American Coner Iasi. The American Corner hosted an English class that had as subject the biography and landmarks of Edgar Allan Poe’s literary work.

The students present found out about the genial poet by looking over the books in the American Corner and by watching the documentary “An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe”.

The 10 7th graders and their English teacher read two of the most important poems of the author, “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” and tried to describe the feelings transmitted by these verses.

The conclusion was that, although the subject was quite difficult, the students, even if so young, were very interested and found similarities in the work of two Romanian poets: Lucian Blaga or George Bacovia.

In the end, all participants received the “American Arts” magazine and the invitation to return to the American Corner Iasi.

În 20 februarie 2007, a avut loc a doua întâlnire prevazuta în programul de activitati al proiectului „Meeting Uncle Sam”, în parteneriat cu Scoala „Gh. I. Bratianu” Iasi. American Corner Iasi a gazduit o ora de limba engleza ce a avut drept subiect biografia si repere din opera literara a lui Edgar Allan Poe.

Elevii prezenti au primit informatii despre genialul poet prin rasfoirea cartilor aflate la American Corner si prin vizionarea documentarului „An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe”.

Cei 10 elevi si profesoara de engleza au citit doua dintre cele mai importante poezii ale autorului: „Corbul” si „Annabel Lee” si au purtat discutii încercând sa descrie sentimentele pe care le transmit aceste versuri .

Din discutiile finale a reiesit ca, desi subiectul a fost dificil, elevii (chiar daca mici ca vârsta - clasa a VII-a) au fost foarte interesati gasind similitudini cu poeti români de care auzisera deja: Lucian Blaga sau George Bacovia.

Toti participantii au primit la plecare revista „American Arts” si invitatia de a reveni la American Corner Iasi.
