International Human Rights Day

Friday, December 8 and Monday, December 11, 2006, the American Corner Iasi hosted two interactive meetings on the theme of respecting the human rights and, especially, the rights of the children.

These activities emphasized the meaning of the date December 10, declared "The International Day of Human Rights", that was first time adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations as this date in 1948.

Our guest from Friday, Ioana Atasiei, project assistant within the Iasi Branch of the National Organization "Save the Children" Romania, presented to the 27 students of "D. Cantemir" High School Iasi a documentary with real cases of disadvantaged children and the efforts of the volunteers of this organization to help them integrate and live a normal life. The film challenged the students that attended to a debate concerning the rights, but also the responsabilities of the children. The students were impressed by what they saw and offered to contribute to the Christmas donations made by the Iasi Branch of "Save the Children" Romania.

The meeting on Monday had a different approach, because Monica Toderascu, belonging to the same organization, chose to disseminate the message about the importance of knowing and respecting the rights of the children through some educational games. The participants, 29 pupils from the Economic Scholar Group of Tourism Iasi, got involved in the activity and in this way they’ve enriched their knowledge.

The children were rewarded for their participation with flyers and magazines to remind them of the time spent at the American Corner.

The event was covered by a local newspaper ("Metropolis").

Ziua Internationala a Drepturilor Omului
