PUBLIC DIPLOMACY
Press Section
The Press Section's main duties are answering daily Romanian media inquiries, conducting non-academic exchange programs for journalists, arranging media training in the U.S. for working professionals, and taking care of the media needs of high-level U.S. government visitors, trade missions, and official delegations. It offers a wide variety of services, including the dissemination of publications, organization of conferences, interviews, lectures, video dialogues, etc.
The Press Section makes available, electronically and in hard copy, several documents daily, ranging from press releases to inform the media of U.S. Embassy and U.S. government activities to full texts of important official documents such as treaties, policy papers, statements and speeches of high-level U.S. government officials. Back issues and summaries of U.S. views on important policy issues are also made available to institutions on a regular basis. Daily activities include a report on major Romanian news and media reaction on the United States.
The Press Section works with the Romanian print and electronic media services and provides authoritative information on policies of the U.S. administration, disseminates U.S. government statements, and respond to queries from journalists regarding U.S. government actions and positions. It also tracks media opinion on issues of interest to the United States and assists the Romanian and U.S. press during visits of high-level U.S. government officials and speakers.
Some of the other important functions of the Press Section include:
- Organizing and supporting all media events related to the U.S. Ambassador to Romania
- Daily close monitoring of the Romanian media and compilation of a Press Summary used by the U.S. Ambassador and principal Embassy officers
- Scheduling and supporting press conferences for visiting high-level U.S. government officials and the international press accompanying them, and occasionally, organizing exclusive interviews for Romanian media with these visiting U.S. officials
- Together with the Department of State's Foreign Press Center, arranges non-academic exchange programs, reporting tours, and training for working journalists
- Organizing round table discussions, lectures, or symposia on U.S. foreign policy and economics, with visiting media experts, academics or lecturers, to keep the Romanian media and government agencies informed about U.S. policy and current issues
- Liaisons with Worldnet Television, IPP's television and film service, and "The Voice of America" radio. Through Worldnet, the Press Section organizes video press conferences via satellite. This modern audio-visual means of teleconferencing allows foreign journalists to question and interview live high-level government officials, experts in specific fields and authoritative personalities on current topics on a timely basis
Initial inquiries for press support should be made through the Public Affairs Officer at Press & Culture.
