Appointments for Nonimmigrant Visa Interviews

APPOINTMENTS REQUIRED

All applicants for non-immigrant visas must appear for a personal interview at the U.S. Embassy, except for those mentioned below. The visa application processing fee is $100. The visa information/ appointment scheduling fee is $11. Both fees are payable in lei at any branch of the Bank of Transylvania.

EXCEPTIONS: Applicants over the age of 80 or under 14 (if traveling with parents who have valid U.S. visas), who were not denied a visa the last time they applied, may utilize the Drop Box or DHL service and do not need to appear for an appointment. These applicants must submit a fee receipt with their applications for the $100 application processing fee, but do not need to pay the $11 fee to schedule an appointment, since they do not need a personal visa interview. Please click here for instructions on utilizing the Embassy Drop Box or DHL service.

HOW TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

To schedule an appointment, call the Visa Information Service (VIS), where you will be able to speak with a visa agent who can answer any questions you have about the visa process, and who will be able to schedule you for a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest. All applicants who need a visa interview (everyone except those who qualify as an exception, above) must schedule the interview through the VIS.

  1. Pay the $11 PIN fee at any branch of the Bank of Transylvania. Click here for branch locations. You will receive a PIN (personal identification number) from the bank. The PIN number is valid for one year.
  2. Wait until the following day after 1:00 pm. (It takes that long for the PIN numbers to be downloaded into the VIS computer).
  3. Call the VIS at 0800-88-8472 (0800-88-VISA) or 021-202-9999 to schedule your appointment. The VIS is available from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday-Friday (Bucharest time). When you call, you will be required to provide the PIN number you purchased at the bank. You or your representative may also use 021-202-9999 if calling from outside Romania.
  4. Your PIN number will allow you to speak with the visa agent for up to 7 minutes. The time will not start until you begin speaking with the visa agent (time “on hold” does not count against the 7 minutes). With one PIN number, you can schedule appointments for as many as 5 members of your immediate family who live at the same address.
  5. If you do not use the entire 7 minutes on your first call, you may use the same PIN number again for more questions or to change your scheduled appointment. However, the remaining time on your PIN number is identifiable with you and is not transferable to someone else.

There may be as much as a four to six-week period between the date of payment and the appointment date. The consular section advises that applicants NEVER purchase nonrefundable tickets until a visa is issued.

If you miss your appointment, you must call the VIS to reschedule. If you have time left on your original PIN, you can use the same PIN, but otherwise you will have to buy another PIN number to reschedule your appointment. Do not come to the Embassy before rescheduling; we will not accept your application.

NOTE: Both the $11 PIN fee and the $100 visa application processing fee are paid at any branch of the Bank of Transylvania. Both fees are processing fees and are not refundable, even if you decide not to schedule an appointment or apply for a visa.

Not everyone has to pay both fees, however. For example, those who qualify for the exception (above) must pay the $100 application processing fee, but do not need to pay the $11 PIN fee, since they do not need to schedule an appointment. On the other hand, someone who doesn’t have a current plan to travel, but just wants to speak with a visa agent about what the requirements are for a student visa, for example, must pay the $11 PIN fee to speak with a visa agent, but does not need to pay the $100 application processing fee (if that person has time left on his PIN and decides later in the year to apply for a student visa, he can call back using the same PIN to schedule the appointment).

There is a lengthy explanation of recommended supporting documentation on this website. However, simply presenting documentation during an interview does not guarantee that an applicant will receive a visa. Please click here and review this information prior to the interview.

Codul PIN are valabilitate un an.
  2. Asteptati pana la ora 13:00 in urmatoarea zi lucratoare. (Atat dureaza ca numerele codurilor PIN sa fie descarcate in calculatoarele Serviciului de Programare si Informare).

Prezentarea documentelor in timpul interviului nu garanteaza obtinerea vizei. Apasati aici pentru a revedea cerintele.
