The USAID Mission to Romania officially closed operations on August 29, 2008.
Since 1990, the United States Government invested over $600 million in economic and development assistance to Romania. Romanians used this assistance to pursue crucial democratic and economic reforms. Joint efforts of Romanians and Americans broke new ground in key areas for Romania’s continued growth. For example, USAID assistance helped create new financial instruments including mortgage lending, decrease the red tape and time for registering a business, and created important regulatory bodies. In the area of reproductive health, Romania has become a model for the region and the world in providing access to services. Great strides have been made to increase opportunities for people with disabilities. And, the NGO sector is strong and growing with advocacy voices heard loud and clear throughout all levels of government and society.
Through these important reforms, the country has succeeded in completing an amazing transformation in just 17 years, become a member of NATO and of the European Union, playing an increasingly important role in the Black Sea region, and becoming an important partner for the U.S in the Balkans.
