Digital library of ethnologic images "Dimitrie Gusti"
Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation
A project of National Village Museum "Dimitrie Gusti"
Digital library of ethnologic images “Dimitrie Gusti” has as main goal to preserve and present to the specialists and to the public the heritage of ethnological visual archives owned by “Dimitrie Gusti” National Village Museum.
"Masterpieces" in the collections of the museum, more than 10.000 photos and glass-negatives, were made between 1928 and 1936, when the Sociological School in Bucharest made monographic researches in several areas of Romania under the scientific coordination of professor Dimitrie Gusti.
This valuable heritage is stored in the new building of the National Village Museum “Dimitrie Gusti” and the objectives of the proposed project are to create specific storage and conservation for more than 10,000 items.
Archival management and preservation are the phases in which each item is classified and stored in specific conditions of conservation, followed by digital preservation.
The final phase - building the digital library of ethnologic images, will represent the synthesis of these activities. The on-line ethnologic library will be the permanent way of comunication with the specialists in the field and the public, being, in the same time, the method to measure the results of the project, and the interest in the value of these visual documents.
The project will resolve several problems such as :
• complex preservation of each heritage item using modern techniques and materials for conservation;
• computer-assisted archival management and cataloguing ;
• digital preservation and presentation of collections.
The specialists being involved in the project have a valuable experience in collection management, conservation and restoration, as well as in software application and data-base IT administration.
