Seabees start work on kindergartens in Constanta

March 3, 2008

CONSTANTA, Romania — After a short adjustment into their new home for the next six months, the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 74, Romania Detachment led by CWO2 William McDermott, began upgrade work for Kindergartens No. 31 and 46 in Constanta last week.

Seabees from the "Fearless 74" are scheduled to work eight hours a day, five to six days a week for the next six weeks to complete the upgrades. The work consists of replacing the old fence from both kindergartens with a new wire-mesh fence and replacing the wooden floor in the main room of Kindergarten 31. The Seabees team working at Kindergarten 46 will also repaint the outside walls to enhance the appearance of the building.

NMCB 74 is scheduled to rotate back to Gulfport, Miss., in August and is scheduled to be replaced by NMCB 4 ("Fabulous 4") from Port Hueneme, Calif. Seabees plan to maintain a continuous rotation of detachments to Romania and Bulgaria to upgrade Romanian and Bulgarian military bases and perform humanitarian assistance projects in the two Joint Task Force-East host nations.

NMCB 74 is a 600-person Seabee Combat Battalion that specializes in contingency construction, disaster relief and humanitarian civic actions. There are currently 25 Seabees in Romania.
