U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE RELEASES INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT FOR 2005

The U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC, released on November 8, 2005 its annual International Religious Freedom Report. The report was presented to the U.S. Congress and is required by law. It describes the status of religious freedom in each of the 195 countries around the world.

The individual report on Romania states that in general, the Romanian government respects the right of freedom of religion and relations among different religious groups are amicable. In addition to other positive steps, the report specifically notes the commemoration of Romania's annual Holocaust Remembrance Day and initial steps taken to introduce the issue of the Holocaust in school curricula.

Among the continued challenges highlighted in the report on Romania are the slow progress towards the return of religious properties seized during the communist period, including those of the Greek Catholic Church; the differentiation of so-called recognized and unrecognized religions; and the difficulties faced by some minority religions in proselytizing and carrying out their religious activities.

The report covers the period from July 2004 to July 2005.

The individual report for Romania can viewed in English and Romanian at the U.S. Embassy website at http://bucharest.usembassy.gov/US_Policy/2005_Reports.html

Raportul acopera perioada iulie 2004-iulie 2005.

Raportul individual pentru Romania poate fi consultat, atat in limba engleza, cat si in limba romana, pe site-ul Ambasadei S.U.A., la http://bucharest.usembassy.gov/US_Policy/2005_Reports.html
