Ambassador Mark Lagon, Senior Adviser to the Secretary of State on Human Trafficking, visited Romania to discuss trafficking in persons (TIP) with officials from the Government of Romania and local NGOs.
During Ambassador Lagon's 3-day visit (February 11-13), met with representatives of Romanian Orthodox Church and Patriarch Daniel. He thanked the Romanian Orthodox Church for being a powerful ally in the movement to end human trafficking and for opposing the idea of legalizing prostitution. Ambassador Lagon was interviewed by the national daily, Evenimentul Zilei and Radio and TV Trinitas. Ambassador Lagon also highlighted the law enforcement cooperation in between the two countries and discussed the topic of legalizing prostitution in Romania in a live interview on the evening newscast Ora de Stiri on TVR 2, the second public TV channel. He warned that legalizing prostitution does harm by increasing the demand for human trafficking.
