Remarks of Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman on the Launch of the U.S. - Romanian Ambassadorial Road Show

American Cultural Center,
January 31, 2008

Welcome to all of you and thank you for coming. I especially want to recognize and thank Ambassador Iulian Buga, State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Radu Enache, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania, for joining me here today to announce an exciting joint initiative we are about to undertake, seeking to promote business opportunities in Romania to companies in the United States.

Next week, from February 4-8, I will be leading a delegation to New York, Washington D.C., and Atlanta. I will be joined in each city by the newly-appointed Romanian Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Adrian Vierita, and by members of our respective staffs. Completing our delegation will be several esteemed representatives from the American Chamber here: Silviu Hotaran of Microsoft; Cristian Colteanu of GE; Shahmir Khaliq of Citigroup; Mihaela Mitroi of PricewaterhouseCoopers; and Anca Harasim, Amcham Executive Director, some of whom are seated here on the front row.

Romania and the United States today enjoy a close strategic partnership as allies and friends. In the context of that partnership, many prominent American companies have recognized Romania's tremendous promise and economic potential, and have expressed their confidence in Romania's future by making sizeable investments here – as represented by the Amcham members who are with us today. They have all found Romania to be an exciting and attractive place to do business. But we believe that there are many more business opportunities here awaiting other American investors, and on our "Roadshow" next week we will be taking this positive message to businesspeople in three of America's most influential cities.

You may ask, why are we making such a substantial effort to promote Romania back in the United States? The answer is quite simple: successful American investments in Romania strengthen both of our economies, benefit our citizens, and tie us closer together on many levels. You may be interested to know that, in addition to the events with business executives, we will also meet with Romanian students who are studying in the U.S. These bright young people have great potential, and we will be urging them to return home after graduation and apply their newly-acquired skills to further Romania's economic progress.

I am genuinely excited about telling Romania's great story in the U.S. next week.
