Ambassador Nicholas Taubman’s Holiday Message

The holiday season is a time to celebrate our faith – faith in the kindness of man and faith in what the future holds. It is also a time of celebration with friends and family. Even if not everyone can have a “cozonac” on his table, my Romanian friends know that a rich country is one that is rich in values, not necessarily in money. A country cannot be rich in values if it does not understand the importance of its people and the fact that it must care for them.

The holidays are also a time to remember those who are far from home. There are many families in Romania and America that have loved ones spending the holidays in Iraq, Afghanistan or other far off places, helping to preserve liberty and to wipe out the scourge of terrorism. We should remember these courageous members of the Armed Forces, as well as their families, in our thoughts and prayers while we celebrate the holidays.

It is been a very productive year for US-Romanian relations. Together we have cooperated in many areas -- security, economics, culture, and more. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dynamic and energetic partner who shares with our belief in the same core democratic principles. I look forward to cooperating with Romania as it moves forward in to Europe.

My wife and I are deeply grateful for the warm hearts that have befriended us during our first year here. As we look to 2007, when Romania will be a member of the European Union, I plan to work to strengthen relations between our governments and our peoples, for the benefit of both countries.

To all Romanians, my warmest wishes for 2007!
