US AMBASSADOR NICHOLAS TAUBMAN EU ACCESSION MESSAGE

As U.S. Ambassador to Romania, I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate the Romanian people and the Government of Romania for Romania’s accession to the European Union.

The United States strongly supported Romania’s EU candidacy. Joining the EU is a major step along the road to building a just and enduring democracy and to spreading the benefits of economic development to all of Romania’s citizens.

This is a time of historic change, of great joy and of opportunity. Joining the EU will bring major advantages. But it will also bring new challenges that Romania must undertake in order to fulfill its destiny as an important European state and a model for the region.

I applaud the fact that Romania has embraced the ideas of freedom and democracy not only for itself, but for others as well. My hope is that Romania will continue to play an active role in international fora like the U.N. and the OSCE, and in stability and peacekeeping missions in trouble spots around the world.

We are grateful that America has such a valiant and trustworthy ally as Romania in the global war on terrorism and we are looking forward to further strengthening our strategic partnership, along with the enduring and true friendship between our peoples.

Again, congratulations! The United States joins you in celebrating this momentous occasion. I am persuaded the European Union will be stronger and better with Romania as one of its members.
