U.S. Embassy Statement on the Death of Private First Class Claudiu Marius Covrig
June 13, 2008
On behalf of Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman, the United States Embassy extends its deepest and most solemn condolences to the family and friends of Private First Class Claudiu Marius Covrig, who died on June 13 from injuries sustained after he and other members of the 300th Infantry Galati Battalion were attacked by insurgent forces while on patrol outside Qalat, Afghanistan. We also pray for the health and speedy recovery of Second Lieutenant Marius Vasile Apostol, Sergeant Major Daniel Dumitru Drugan and Corporal Marius Barbu who were wounded in that same attack.
The mission that Private Covrig and his fellow soldiers are engaged in is a dangerous, but necessary one to stop the spread of terrorism and chaos, and to help the people of Afghanistan build a democratic nation free, stable, and at peace. We extend our sincerest sympathies and our profound gratitude for their sacrifice for this noble and just cause.
