BUCHAREST – Reflecting the agency’s on-going commitment to Romania, USTDA awarded one grant today that will be used to fund the establishment of a plan for the sustainable redevelopment of mining zones in Gorj County. The grant builds on the agency’s long and productive support for priority projects in Romania. Since 2001, USTDA has provided more than $12 million to advance projects in the energy and power, services, water and the environment, transportation, telecommunications, mining and natural resources, and agribusiness sectors. In 2003, Romania was recognized as the agency’s Country of the Year as a result of its diverse and successful relationship with USTDA, as well as the country’s impressive economic performance. A signing ceremony to confer the grant was held at the America Center at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest. U.S. Ambassador to Romania Nicholas Taubman signed the agreement on behalf of U.S. government. US Embassy Commercial Attaché Cindy Biggs signed as a witness to the grant agreement. Mr. Marcel Hoara, General Director of the National Agency for the Redevelopment of Mining Zones (ANDZM) within the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, signed the first grant agreement on behalf of the Romanian Government. Cosmin Mihai Popescu, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, signed as a witness to the grant agreement. The $470,982 grant responds to the economic redevelopment needs of Gorj County, which was severely impacted by the recent closure of mines, and its need for environmental remediation. The grant will be used to establish a master plan of mining redevelopment projects for ANDZM to use in fostering and implementing a sustainable program to infuse economic resources into the region. The study will identify and prioritize a series of potential ecological reconstruction and infrastructure projects whose development would contribute to the sustainable redevelopment of the county. ANDZM has selected Applied Ecological Services, Inc. of Brodhead, Wisconsin, as the contractor for this USTDA-funded study. Visit USTDA’s Website at http://www.ustda.gov
