Non Immigrant Visas
Exchange Program & Training Visas
The “J” visa provides for educational and cultural exchange programs and training/internship opportunities. For detailed information about these types of programs and specific qualifications, visit the State Department’s Exchange Visas web page and Private Sector Programs web page.
Applying for a J Visa at the Consular Section
In addition to the forms and fees for regular non-immigrant visa applications (click the Appointments & Fees link for more information), J visa applicants must also bring the following:
- Completed DS 2019 Form provided by the sponsor
- Completed Form 7002 provided by the sponsor, for training and internship programs only
- SEVIS form and fee receipt (this fee can be paid online at http://www.fmjfee.com)
- DS-158 form
- DS-156 & DS-157 form (for men between the ages of 16 and 45)
Program Validity
J visa holders may not enter the United States more than 30 days before the start date on their DS-2019 form. There is a 30 day grace period, which allows J visa holders to remain in the United States for up to 30 days after the end date on their DS-2019 form solely for the purpose of traveling. It is not permitted to work or train beyond the end date on the DS-2019 form.
Training and internship programs are designed to enhance a participant’s educational background or employment experience. Applicants must demonstrate to the consular officer that the program for which they are applying meets the strict requirements of a qualified training or internship program. For more information about training programs, visit the State Department’s Trainees web page.
Two-Year Residency Requirement
J visa holders may be subject to a two-year residency requirement, which prevents them from adjusting status in the United States to H, L, or K visa categories, or from immigrating to the United States, for a period of 2 years after the conclusion of the program. Au pairs, high school exchange students, and Summer Work & Travel visa holders are exempt from this requirement.
