AMERICAN ASSISTANCE FOR ROMANIAN FLOOD VICTIMS CONTINUES

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded another grant of $50,000 to International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) as part of the U.S. Government’s response to this year’s devastating floods in Romania.

IOCC will work in partnership with local and county government officials and the Romanian Orthodox Church. Lodging, basic home furnishings, and fuel for the winter will be provided to 75 families in the villages of Cosmesti Vale and Umbraresti in Galati County. IOCC also will distribute 500 blankets, 700 personal hygiene kits, and 800 school kits to flood victims in surrounding communities.

With winter fast approaching, the U.S. and Romanian Governments and their partners recognize the importance of mobilizing communities to complete house repairs, rehabilitate schools, and set up shelters for displaced persons in those communities where housing repair is most difficult. The IOCC project is part of this “winterization” effort.

Since flooding began in April, U.S. Government humanitarian assistance to Romania has totaled more than $5 million thus far. The U.S. Department of Defense has also donated goods and equipment for the renovation of houses, schools, and medical facilities, and matching contributions from private companies such as Pioneer and Monsanto have brought in additional hundreds of thousands of dollars. These funds have been used for:

  • Provision of emergency relief supplies such as water and water purification kits, personal hygiene items, food supplies, and portable stoves;
  • Direct assistance to farmers and small businesses;
  • Public information campaigns to prevent flood-related health emergencies; and
  • Other health, social, and economic projects.

These activities are implemented U.S. Government agencies and other partners, including IOCC, John Snow International (JSI), Community Habitat Finance (CHF), World Vision, Habitat for Humanity, and Chemonics. The U.S. Government continues to explore options for bringing further funding, supplies, and activities to the aid of those affected by the floods.

Avand in vedere apropierea rapida a iernii, cele doua guverne si partenerii lor cunosc importanta mobilizarii imediate a populatiei in vederea restaurarii caselor, a scolilor, in vederea construirii de adaposturi in comunitatile unde reparatia caselor este extrem de dificila.

  • Asigurarea proviziilor pentru starea de urgenta precum apa si aparate de purificat apa, produse de igiena personala, alimente si sobe portabile;
  • Asistenta directa acordata fermierilor si micilor intreprinzatori;

Aceste proiecte sunt implementate de agentiile guvernamentale americane si alti parteneri, inclusiv IOCC, John Snow Int’l (JSI), Community Habitat Finance (CHF), World Vision, Habitat for Humanity, si Chemonics. Guvernul SUA continua sa caute solutii in vederea continuarii asigurarii fondurilor, proviziilor si activitatilor menite sa vina in ajutorul celor afectati de inundatii.
