STATEMENT MADE BY U.S. AMBASSADOR J.D. CROUCH UPON THE RELEASE OF THE REPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON THE HOLOCAUST IN ROMANIA
On behalf of the U.S. Government, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania, as it releases its landmark report on Romania's role in this tragic phase of history.
The Commission -- comprised of scholars, teachers, civic leaders, witnesses, and survivors -- combined its knowledge into a monumental document that charts the Holocaust in Romania and builds a foundation to ensure that all citizens of Romania and the world are made aware of these atrocities and do not forget that they occurred.
Throughout Europe some six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, at least 400,000 from land that was or is Romania. Atrocities in Romania extended not only to the once large and diverse Jewish population, but also --- as in other parts of Europe -- to other minorities, including the Roma.
The victims were not faceless or anonymous. Each one was someone's father, mother, son, daughter, friend, or beloved. Every single one was a child of God.
It is difficult for any nation to deal with horrible events that cast a shadow on its past. Mr. President, we especially commend you for your leadership and we commend the Government of Romania for creating this Commission and committing to teach the Commission's findings to all Romanians, particularly the young.
We owe nothing less than the truth to future generations, such that we may prevent them from re-treading the path of hatred and intolerance.
