NNSA Announces Removal of Last Highly Enriched Uranium from Romania; First Air Shipment of Russian-Origin Spent Fuel
June 30, 2009 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration today announced the final shipments of Russian-origin highly enriched uranium (HEU) nuclear fuel from Romania. The material was removed and returned to Russia by air for storage at two secure nuclear facilities, making Romania the first country to remove all HEU since President Obama outlined his commitment to securing all vulnerable nuclear material around the world within four years. This was also the first time NNSA has shipped “spent” HEU by airplane, a development that will help accelerate efforts to meet the President’s objective.

The Ranchhands
June 28, 2009 American country music band The Ranchhands played to an eager audience in Giurgiu, Romania on June 28th, sharing their blend of classic country music and modern production techniques. The band had significant local appeal, drawing a large audience to Piata Tricolorului that included a wide range of ages and backgrounds.

Trafficking in Persons Report 2009
June 16, 2009 Secretary Clinton announced the release of the ninth annual Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report. The 175-country report is the most comprehensive worldwide report on the efforts of governments to combat severe forms of trafficking in persons, a modern-day form of slavery.

Flag Day 2009
June 11, 2009 To celebrate Flag Day, nearly 500 Bucharest English high school students gathered in the garden of the Ambassador’s residence on June 11 to compete in creating “posters” illustrating the important industries and products of a particular U.S. state or the District of Columbia.

The Romanian Ministry of Health recently instituted a policy of requiring individuals traveling from countries affected by the H1N1 virus to complete a Health Declaration Form upon arrival into Romania.
